We’ve all heard the adage, "A person is only as good as his word." We’ve listened to it for our entire lives, but do we live as if we believe it?

If we want to have a stable relationship based on trust, we have to be consistent. We can’t get lazy, complacent, take each other for granted, or blow each other off because we think the other person will still be there. We have to behave in ways that engender trust if the other person is going to let their guard down, risk being vulnerable, and allow themselves to be close.

Trust depends on integrity. If people can’t rely on your word, they won’t trust you. They may extend some grace, but eventually, people will doubt and disbelieve. Influence depends on trust. People will refuse the authority of leaders they distrust. We follow people we trust. An Impact depends on influence. You can’t make the impact you want unless you can influence others and shift their behaviour.

The strength of our relationships is measured by how much people can count on us. If we’re not true to our words, which means our connections will be as unreliable as we are.
